![]() ![]() There are technologies that aim to prevent mind wandering by engendering a highly immersive learning experience and have achieved some success in this regard. Further, boredom is related to but not the same as attention. Some advanced technologies do aim to detect and respond to affective states like boredom, but evidence for their effectiveness is still equivocal (see for a review). For example, it has been estimated that students mind wander approximately 40% of the time when engaging with online lectures, which are an important component of MOOCs. Traditional learning technologies rely on the assumption that students are attending to the learning session, although this is not always the case. ![]() Mind wandering is also unfortunately an under-addressed problem in education and is yet to be deeply studied in the context of learning with technology. When compounded with its high frequency, mind wandering can have serious consequences on the performance and productivity of society at large. Mind wandering is more than merely incidental a recent meta-analysis of 88 samples indicated a negative correlation between mind wandering and performance across a variety of tasks, a correlation which increases with task complexity. People reported mind wandering for 46.9% of the prompts, which confirmed lab studies on the pervasiveness of mind wandering (see for a review). One recent study tracked mind wandering of 5,000 individuals from 83 countries with a smartphone app that prompted people with thought-probes at random intervals throughout the day. This prediction is not based on some negative or cynical opinion of the reader/reviewer (we read and review papers too), but on what is known about attentional control, vigilance, and concentration while individuals are engaged in complex comprehension activities, such as reading for understanding. Despite your best intention to concentrate on our paper, at some point your attention might drift away to unrelated thoughts of lunch, childcare, or an upcoming trip. INTRODUCTION Despite our best efforts to write a clear and engaging paper, chances are high that within the next 10 pages you might fall prey to what is referred to as zoning out, daydreaming, or mind wandering. Keywords Mind wandering gaze tracking student modeling attentionaware. Our results suggest that the technology was successful in correcting comprehension deficits attributed to mind wandering (d =.47 sigma) under specific conditions, thereby highlighting the potential to improve learning by attending to attention. The key dependent variable was performance on a post-reading comprehension assessment. After multiple rounds of iterative refinement, we summatively compared the technology to a yoked-control in an experiment with 104 participants. When mind wandering is detected, the technology intervenes by posing just-in-time questions and encouraging re-reading as needed. Towards this end, we developed a technology that automatically detects mind wandering from eye-gaze during learning from instructional texts. ![]() We propose that next-generation learning technologies should have some mechanism to detect and respond to mind wandering in real-time. D Mello, Caitlin Mills, Robert Bixler, & Nigel Bosch University of Notre Dame 118 Haggar Hall Notre Dame, IN 46556, USA ABSTRACT Mind wandering, defined as shifts in attention from task-related processing to task-unrelated thoughts, is a ubiquitous phenomenon that has a negative influence on performance and productivity in many contexts, including learning. 2 Zone out no more: Mitigating mind wandering during computerized reading Sidney K. ![]()

Best german pilsner beer11/9/2022 ![]() ![]() ![]() It’s floral and a little spicy, made with four types of German hops. Made in Pennsylvania, the Prima Pils is Victory Brewing’s beloved baby. The McMinnville brewery takes a lot of pride in its slow, cool fermentation, which leads to balanced beers with tremendous purity. The pilsner is arguably the brewery’s finest work, Bohemian in style and every kind of refreshing. Located in the heart of Oregon wine country, Heater Allen has been quietly making outstanding beer since 2007. It’s a flavorful gem made in the wonderful world that is Big Sky Country. Hence, it deliciously crosses everything off the list, from its perfect light gold color to its 34 EBUs (European Bitterness Units, of which it needs at least 28 to be dubbed a pilsner). Fittingly, the Montana outfit makes a mean pilsner, adhering to fairly strict German criteria (all the way down to spelling it “pilsener”). Missoula brewery Bayern is inspired by the German tradition, as its name suggests. Fantastic pilsners are being brewed in Oregon, Montana, Pennsylvania, and elsewhere. Today, you don’t have to sniff out the European section of your favorite bottle shop for the good stuff. Bright and beaming domestic pilsners lost out to, well, Bud (and sibling beers).įortunately, the recent rise in the craft beer tide has lifted all styles within, including the pilsner. And while there likely were some tasty batches early on, it wasn’t long before the biggest breweries took the pilsner and stripped it of its personality. With so many European immigrants coming to the states a couple of centuries ago, one would expect a decent pilsner recipe or two. Countless labels specialize in the stuff, from Pilsner Urquell and Stella Artois to Beck’s and Warsteiner. It has been a sensation ever since, the most-consumed beer style on the planet. Thus, the pilsner was devised, a combination of Pilsen’s esteemed local water supply, native hops, and a bottom-fermented approach. Brewers and drinkers alike wanted more consistency and the former looked to fine-tune their recipes with better ingredients and more sophisticated strains of yeast. By the 1800s, there was a movement towards higher quality beer inspired by the goings-on in Bavaria. It was first brewed in the Czech town of Pilsen, a place with a rich beer heritage that goes all the way back to the 13th Century. The pilsner was born in the Old World in the mid-18th Century. The incredibly clean lager beer style was long something Europeans excelled at. ![]() It took a while for America to get the hang of the pilsner. ![]()

Amazon civ v complete11/8/2022 ![]() The distribution of the potential sites suggests an interconnected, advanced series of fortified villages spanning over 1,100 miles that flourished between 12 A.D. That flies in the face of previous estimates that only about 2 million people lived in the entire Amazon basin. The team now thinks that between 500,000 and 1 million people once lived in just seven percent of the Amazon basin. The computer model also predicted population densities that were much larger than expected. It revealed that there are likely 1,300 geoglyphs and villages in a 154,000 square-mile swath of Southern Amazonia-two-thirds of which haven’t been found yet. ![]() The model also showed that people wouldn’t necessarily have built close to rivers, an idea which runs counter to modern assumptions. It showed that people would likely have built geoglyphs in higher-elevation areas with big variations in seasons and temperatures. They located ceramics and charcoal suggesting a village that dated to about 1410 A.D.īack in the office, they used their findings to predict where other sites might be located, creating a computer model that took everything from elevation to soil pH to precipitation into account. “We knew we were in a special area.”Īt one site, the team went deeper. Sure enough, each of the 24 targets they visited was the real deal. Then, armed with the coordinates of likely geoglyphs, they headed to the field-sometimes literally, since large swaths of land in the region are used for agriculture. The team used satellite imagery to try to identify ancient geoglyphs-earthworks likely used for ceremonies-in previously unexplored parts of the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso. Much of the region is unexplored and covered in dense forest, so it’s been inaccessible to archaeologists interested in learning more about life away from the mighty river. “Many people have the image that it’s an untouched paradise,” says Jonas Gregorio de Souza, an archaeologist at the University of Exeter who collaborated on the project. That perception has endured despite 16th-century accounts of large, interconnected villages that go against modern assumptions. ![]() The research, funded in part by the National Geographic Society and published today in the journal Nature Communications, challenges a common perception of the pre-Columbian Amazon rain forest as sparsely populated. New research suggests a very different story-an Amazonian region peppered with rain forest villages, ceremonial earthworks, and a much larger population than previously thought. Before Spanish invaders conquered South America, sparse groups of nomadic people clustered around the Amazon River, leaving the surrounding rain forest pristine and untouched. ![]()
